Class of Nuke ‘Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown (1991)

April 12, 1991

Review/Film;
Subhumanoids Develop A Durability Problem

Published: April 12, 1991

Somewhere beneath the gallons of green slime spewed by mutant creatures in “Class of Nuke ‘Em High Part 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown” gurgles a message: subhumans have feelings too.

The latest offering from Troma Inc. is the sequel to the independent film company’s 1986 B-movie success, “Class of Nuke ‘Em High.” A typically loony product from the company responsible for the “Toxic Avenger” films, it conflates the esthetics of John Waters, Russ Meyer and Mad magazine into an uproarious heavy-metal vision of a civilization wallowing in man-made poison as it might be seen through the eyes of a Teen-Age Mutant Ninja Turtle.

The setting for “Subhumanoid Meltdown” is Tromaville Tech, a New Jersey institution of lower learning nestled deep inside a nuclear power plant. In the school basement, a genetically engineered class of menials has been created by mating humans with lower life forms. Beyond a resistance to pain and an exceptional physical strength, the most salient subumanoid feature is a slurping second mouth that takes the place of a human navel.

There’s only one hitch in the plan of Dean Okra (Scott Resnick), the project’s evil squeaky-voiced supervisor, to use the subhumanoids for his nefarious purposes. Individual subhumanoids have begun spontaneously disintegrating into hideous heaps of flying goo in the most public places. It is up to Professor Holt (Lisa Gaye), who engineered the species, to come up with an antidote to what is called “the meltdown syndrome.” That syndrome is not the only peril stalking the campus of Tromaville Tech. A curious squirrel ingests some nuclear waste and grows into a giant, rabid destroyer.

The story is narrated by Roger (Brick Bronsky), the school newspaper’s musclebound ace reporter, who falls in love with Victoria (Leesa Rowland), a subhumanoid he meets in a laboratory sex experiment and teaches how to love.

“Subhumanoid Meltdown,” which was directed by Eric Louzil, is as riotously energetic as it is truly tasteless. Along with the kitchen sink, it throws in just about everything that was ever sucked down the drain.

“Class of Nuke ‘Em High Part 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has nudity and strong language.
